Following a dream from 35 years earlier, Paula and husband Greg, packed up their home in Somerset UK to spend a year on remote Cocos Keeling islands to 'call back the bees' . An extraordinary story of taking risks, following dreams and inspiring a community to reconnect with nature, as well as protect their homeland which is under threat from climate change, and development.

Wild colonies

Paula located and observed wild colonies across the islands. Monitoring their health and expansion. Honeybees were originally brought to the islands in the 1950s and are managed on West island.

Teaching the Cocos Malay Women beekeeping

When the bees returned to Home island, Paula taught the local women how to manage the bees gently, as well as sustainably harvesting honey to share in their community.

Bee Audit

Paula searched the many islands and discovered native carpenter bees, as well as sand burrowing bees, previously not registered on the islands.Awareness of the various bee species is vital in understanding the local environment and learning how species adapt to extreme environments.
